Antonio Carreno | Carreno Returns to New Orleans in His Fifth Solo Exhibition

Stella Jones Gallery

January 3 - February 27, 2026

Press Release

Antonio Carreno’s paintings have been a gradual progression of maturity in technique and style over the course of his career. This series of oil and pastel paintings are reflective of his fresh perspective with spontaneous, organic abstractions that emphasize large, bold sweeping strokes. By experimenting with various tools, Carreno has discovered a way to push the thick pigment across the canvas quickly with potential for more control and allows for the blended and unblended colors to respond and interact with one another organically.

Carreno draws inspiration from landscapes and nature while experimenting with the play of light and color and blurring of texture. The artist has moved to complete abstraction while subtly muting his signature color palette, which reflects his Caribbean upbringing.

Carreno is a native of the Dominican Republic and has works in several public collections including the Latin American Museum of Modern Art in Washington, D.C., the Dominican American Institute of Culture and The Reserved Bank of the Dominican Republic, Dillard University, New Orleans, LA, as well as many important private collections, along with exhibitions at several prestigious galleries and museums.
