Cells and Cycles is Kate Samworth’s 9th solo show at LeMieux Galleries. This exhibition emerged from a meditative process of drawing from the subconscious, where  Samworth discovered symbols as tools to continue her exploration of the connection between humans, nature, and the divine.

Used as a symbol of cyclical infinity, circles of all sizes populate her work, conjuring the spiritual quality that permeates much of her oeuvre. Keyholes can also be found throughout these works, as Samworth likens spirituality to an exterior light passing through a small, private, interior world. Through an artistic practice focused on the intangible, Samworth is able to meditate on mortality and grief. As she processes these complexities, she opens a contemplative space for the viewer as well.

Kate Samworth was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee, but primarily grew up in the suburbs of Washington DC. She studied and taught painting at the New Orleans Academy of Fine Art before earning her BFA from the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Art and embarking on an exciting and prolific career. She has exhibited extensively nationally and abroad, as well as, illustrated a number of books for children and adults.  Her first illustrated book, Aviary Wonders Inc., won the Kirkus Prize for Young Readers.
