Press Release

The Arthur Roger Gallery is pleased to present an exhibition of photographs by David Yarrow. The exhibition will be on view at Arthur Roger Gallery, located at 432 Julia Street, from March 7th - October 3rd, 2020. The gallery will host a walkthrough and book signing at the gallery at 2 pm followed by an opening reception with the artist in attendance on Saturday, March 7 from 6–8 pm.

Internationally-acclaimed photographer David Yarrow’s distinctive wildlife photographs are at once formidable and elegant. Majestic mammals from varied extreme environments uniquely engage the viewer in this exhibition of large-scale, monochromatic photographs spanning recent years. The artist has traveled the globe in his pursuit of documenting wildlife, including polar bears in Norway, elephants in Kenya, brown bears in Alaska, rhinos in Tanzania and tigers in India.

David Yarrow uses well-positioned remote-controlled cameras encased in steel boxes and often scented with the most attractive and enticing smell for the animal in question. Always nearby, he patiently anticipates the exact moment that will give his images context, soul, and a sense of place. This approach and his particular perspective produce images that sit outside normal boundaries and create an intimate and mesmeric connection between animal and viewer.

Philanthropy and conservation are integral to the artist’s practice and his respect for the animals and their habitats is evident in his approach and documentation. Included in his wide range of advisory and ambassadorial roles, David Yarrow is the affiliated photographer for Tusk Trust, an organization dedicated to initiating and funding conservation, community development and environmental education programs across Africa.

David Yarrow was born in Glasgow, Scotland in 1966. He took up photography in his youth and began working as a photographer for The London Times when he was 20, covering the Olympics as well as numerous other sporting events. In 1986, he was named Young Scottish Photographer of the Year. He is represented by many of the world’s leading galleries and has had numerous international exhibitions. Four books have been published of Yarrow’s photographs, including Nowhere (2007), Encounter (2013), Wild Encounters (2016), David Yarrow Photography: Americas Africa Antarctica Arctic Asia Europe (2019). The latter contains a forward written by Tom Brady. David Yarrow lives and works in London. This is his second exhibition with the gallery.
