MH Contemporary presents COLLAZO + HERRINGTON / In Conversation, a focused two-person exhibition bringing together recent works by Melissa Herrington and Gabriel Collazo.
The presentation considers how distinct material and compositional approaches operate in proximity—establishing a dialogue shaped by contrast, restraint, and formal clarity.
Melissa Herrington’s paintings are constructed through layered fields of color that register movement, pressure, and interval. Her work resists fixed imagery, developing instead through accumulation and erasure, where subtle shifts in tone and density guide the viewer’s experience. Space functions as an active element—expanded, compressed, and held—allowing each composition to unfold gradually over time.
Working under the Collazo Collection, Gabriel Collazo, in collaboration with Angela Collazo, approaches abstraction through material innovation and structural precision. Combining paint, texture, fire, and a custom fiber resin substrate, the work emphasizes surface, tactility, and controlled process. Angela Collazo’s background in interior design informs a refined sense of scale, proportion, and color, while Gabriel Collazo’s practice embeds each work with a deliberate physicality. The resulting compositions balance complexity with clarity, extending the possibilities of fiber-based abstraction.
Presented together, the works establish a measured exchange between atmosphere and structure. Herrington’s softened, atmospheric fields are set against Collazo’s materially driven surfaces, creating a dynamic tension between fluidity and control, expansion and containment. Each body of work maintains its own language, while sharpening the experience of the other through proximity.
